How to Make Your Soul’s Dreams A Reality: 4 Lessons from the Land

“Have you ever reflected on how growing a garden can teach us about living our soul’s deepest dreams? Follow me for a moment, and I will show you how.

Kneeling on the cool earth in Perth Ontario, I can barely breathe. Sweat drips down my brow as my fingers tremble. The fate of another being’s life lies within my hands.

“Just like that? You’re sure?” I ask for the third time, turning to my guide through this process.

“Don’t overthink it!” the seasoned gardener says. “You gotta trust…”

“Okay…” I reply, swallowing the lump in the back of my throat.

Holding my palm in front of my face, I start to whisper to the tiny brown seeds inside my hand:

“Alright, guys… It’s gonna be okay. I know it’s gonna be dark for a bit, but just keep reaching for the light, okay…?”

I am met with silence, but I still sense their understanding. Clearing my throat, I press one of those little beings about ¾ of an inch into the soft and succulent earth. I repeat this process again and again until the entire plot is filled with pockets of potential.

Now, all I have to do is water, wait, and weed.

Months later, I am overwhelmed by what has transpired in those once-barren fields. Rows upon rows of summer squash run wildly throughout my plots. Pumpkins as large as my head sit triumphantly on the ground. Large green tomatoes the size of my fist grow by the day. Forests of fresh greens offer themselves to me for salads every afternoon and evening.

The abundance that this garden has given me is overwhelming. It has served me on more than just a material level. This garden has fed my emotional, mental, and spiritual hunger in so many rich and rewarding ways that cannot be fully covered in this short piece.

However, I would like to highlight a few lessons I have learned from my garden that can be applied to nearly every area of our lives.

Seeds, Intentions, and Goals: The Power of Patience and Consistency

As I marvel at the abundance that has manifested from those tiny little seeds I nervously planted months ago, I see how much Life’s creative journey mirrors this process. Every idea, dream, or habit we want to grow follows a similar trajectory.

Each intention we cherish is like a capsule of limitless possibility, waiting for the right conditions to flourish: a supportive environment, proper nutrients, consistent care, and, of course, love. With these elements in place, our dream seeds will flourish.

Unfortunately, in our modern world, we often rush to obtain food from the store, disconnecting from the natural process of growth. This disconnection leaves many of us forgetful of what it truly takes to grow something of real value. We scatter our seeds of desires, goals, dreams, and habits with over-eagerness and impatience. But consistency, patience, and trust are necessary for real growth.

Just like a little seed that works away in the darkness, we must be willing to trust the process even if we don’t see immediate results. We must continue reaching towards the light every day and have faith that, in due time, we will break free. Celebrate each small breakthrough, for even the tiniest progress is a significant step in the journey.

To witness substantial growth in any area of our lives, we must be steady in our practice and diligently weed out the things that hinder our progress. We must remove ideas, activities, habits, people, or old ways of thinking that don’t support our overall well-being and the growth we seek. By doing so with love, we create space for the higher goals we aspire to achieve.

Seeds for the Future: Embracing Limitless Potential

As we persevere, we find that the seeds we plant not only nourish us but also have the potential to feed others. Witnessing the growth and harvest of my broccolini plants opened my eyes to the miraculous nature of our pure potential. Hundreds of little pods grew from the broccolini’s green bodies, each containing rows of seeds.

Through stewardship and cultivation, a handful of seeds multiplied into thousands. This limitless potential exists in everything we plant. It is crucial to reflect on the seeds we are sowing, the legacy we wish to leave, and the world we want to create. Cultivate these seeds, remove obstacles, and nurture their growth.

Forget Perfection and Just Start

We don’t need to be perfect or even good when we start. As a gardener, I have been sloppy at times—over-watering, letting weeds run wild, and even killing plants. But I learn from each experience, knowing that I will improve year after year. If I had waited for everything to be “just right,” I would have missed the season and never started. Whatever we seek to grow, remember that we don’t need all the details. Begin now and learn along the way. As my gardening mentor wisely said,

“Relax! Life wants to grow.”

So let’s go for it! There’s no need to worry about having all the answers. Trust that with consistency, patience, and nurturing, what we seek to cultivate will grow and nourish not only ourselves but also the world around us. It’s time plant those seeds of our dreams and bring those gifts to this world.
